“Boneyard” is a staged sterephonic piece for four improvising wind or brass instruments, to be performed outdoors. It was written to be an immersive musical experience that simply happens from out of nature. The world premier took place in July of 2014 at the Traysh Music Festival in Chesterhill, OH.
The piece starts at dusk. The only thing visible to the audience is a soft lamp in the centre of the crowd with four music stands surrounding it. The musicians are hidden from the audience in the trees or in the meadow, facing backward so as to disperse their sound. It begins unannounced with a trumpet sounding in the distance. The sound echoes off the hills. Slowly from all sides the other musicians answer. Over the next 12-15 minutes the musicians gradually emerge turning to face each other, their unison spreads into widening harmony, and as their proximity to the centre of the crowd increases so to does the pacing of the music. As the pacing of the music increases, the sun sets, the crickets chime in and the lamp lit music stands with the musicians slowly approaching become the focal point of the audience. The audience may or may not recognize the starting note of the piece as its beginning, but within minutes the performance makes itself obvious.
